Ode To Nightingale By Keats Essays - Ode To A Nightingale

Ode To Nightingale By Keats In Ode to a Nightingale, John Keats, the author and narrator, used descript terminology to express the deep-rooted pain he was suffering during his battle with tuberculosis. This poem has eight paragraphs or verses of ten lines each and doesn't follow any specific rhyme scheme. In the first paragraph, Keats gave away the mood of the whole poem with his metaphors for his emotional and physical sufferings, for example: My heart aches, and drowsy numbness pains My sense (1-2) Keats then went on to explain to the reader that he was speaking to the "light-winged Dryad" in the poem. This bird symbolizes a Nightingale that to many, depicts the happiness and vibrance of life with the way it seems to gracefully hover over brightly colored flowers to get nectar but, to Keats death, because his was becoming. "Shadows numberless" at the end of the paragraph signifies the angel of death and spirits that had surrounded Keats. Keats vividly and beautifully described wine: ... for a beaker full of the warm South... With beaded bubbles winking at the brim, And purple stained mouth; That I might drink, and leave the he used to bury his fears and emotions about death. In verse three, Keats expressed that most people enjoy a full life and die old, when he pens: Here, men sit and hear each other groan; ...last gray hairs, Where youth grows pale, and spectre-thin, and dies... (24-26) He felt that youth was a time in one's life to enjoy. According to him, being rich, popular, beautiful, funny and smart didn't matter because the angel of death was blind. Keats was afraid of death because of the loved one's he had to leave behind. He expresses that with the phrase: And with thee fade away into the forest dim (20) Keats explained that he had wanted to wander off into the forest so no one would've had to be bothered by him. In paragraph four, Keats had spoken to the Nightingale and told it to go off and leave him alone because he already had known that death was coming and didn't want to be reminded of his sad fate. Keats went on to say: I cannot see what flowers are at my feet, Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs, But, in embalmed darkness... (41-43) This meant he didn't know what was about to happen, only that he was going to die. He then illustrated all the creatures and things that would live long past him; The grass, the thicket, and the fruit-tree wild... (45) In paragraph six, Keats had listened to the "Darkling" or Nightingale singing and this had reminded him of how at one time in his life he questioned death and was even infatuated by it because death was an unknown universe when he composed: ...for many a time I have been half in love with easeful Death, Call'd him soft names... (51-53) But quickly after he had recalled that memory he stated: Still wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain- To thy high requiem become a sod. (59-60) Here he was saying how the "Darkling" sounded beautiful when it sang but that was just a mask for the fate that it was taking him to; death. Thou was not born for death, immortal Bird! (61) The immortal Nightingale wasn't put on this earth to bring people to their deaths, according to Keats. Over generations, the bird has warned "emperors and clowns" that death can not be cheated. ...the fancy cannot cheat so well As she is fam'd to do... (73-74) Here he had stated that the rich could not buy their way out of death because that was all the Nightingale had come to do. The song of the Nightingale had faded and Keats composed, ...thy plaintive anthem fades... ...and now ?tis buried deep (75 & 77) and he didn't know if it was real or if he had dreamed the whole thing. Keats wasn't sure if he was still alive or had died. ?Do I wake or sleep? (80)

Get the Rules and Best Practices for Writing Paragraphs

Get the Rules and Best Practices for Writing Paragraphs The definition of a paragraph: Its a group of closely related sentences that develops a central idea, conventionally beginning on a new line, which is sometimes  indented. The paragraph has been variously defined as a subdivision in a longer written passage, a group of sentences (or sometimes just one sentence) about a specific topic, and a grammatical unit typically consisting of multiple sentences that together express a complete thought. In his 2006 book A Dash of Style, Noah Lukeman describes the paragraph break as one of the most crucial marks in the punctuation world. Etymology:  Paragraph is from the Greek word which means to write beside. Observations A new paragraph is a wonderful thing. It lets you quietly change the rhythm, and it can be like a flash of lightning that shows the same landscape from a different aspect. (Babel, Isaac interviewed by Konstantin Paustovsky in Isaac Babel Talks About Writing, The Nation, March 31, 1969.) 10 Effective Paragraph Criteria Lois Laase and Joan Clemmons offer the following list of 10 helpful suggestions for writing paragraphs. This is adapted from their book, Helping Students Write... The Best Research Reports Ever: Easy Mini-Lessons, Strategies, and Creative Formats to Make Research Manageable and Fun. Keep the paragraph on one topic.Include a topic sentence.Use supporting sentences that give details or facts about the topic.Include vivid words.Make sure it does not have run-on sentences.Include sentences that make sense and stick to the topic.Sentences should be in order and make sense.Write sentences that begin in different ways.Make sure the sentences flow.Be sure sentences are mechanically correct - spelling, punctuation, capitalization, indentation. Topic Sentences in Paragraphs Although the topic sentence is often the first sentence of the paragraph, it does not have to be. Furthermore, the topic sentence is sometimes restated or echoed at the end of the paragraph, although again it does not have to be. However, a well-phrased concluding sentence can emphasize the central idea of the paragraph as well as provide a nice balance and ending. A paragraph is not a constraining formula; in fact, it has variations. In some instances, for example, the topic sentence is not found in a single sentence. It may be the combination of two sentences, or it may be an easily understood but unwritten underlying idea that unifies the paragraph. Nevertheless, the paragraph in most college writing contains discussion supporting a stated topic sentence.... (Brandon, Lee. At a Glance: Paragraphs, 5th ed., Wadsworth, 2012.) Rules of Paragraphing As an advanced writer, you know that rules are made to be broken. But that is not to say that these rules are useless. Sometimes it is good to avoid a one-sentence paragraph - it can sound too brisk and implies a lack of penetration and analysis. Sometimes, or perhaps most of the time, it is good to have a topic sentence. But the awful fact is that when you look closely at a professional writers work, you will see that the topic sentence is often missing. In that case, we sometimes say it is implied, and perhaps that is true. But whether we want to call it implied or not, it is obvious that good writers can get along without topic sentences most of the time. Likewise, it is not a bad idea to develop only one idea in a paragraph, but frankly, the chance of developing several ideas often arises and sometimes doing so even characterizes the writing of professionals. (Jacobus, Lee A. Substance, Style, and Strategy, Oxford University Press, 1998.) Strunk and White on Paragraph Length In general, remember that paragraphing calls for a good eye as well as a logical mind. Enormous blocks of print look formidable to readers, who are often reluctant to tackle them. Therefore, breaking long paragraphs in two, even if it is not necessary to do so for sense, meaning, or logical development, is often a visual help. But remember, too, that firing off many short paragraphs in quick succession can be distracting. Paragraph breaks used only for show read like the writing of commerce or of display advertising. Moderation and a sense of order should be the main considerations in paragraphing. (Strunk, Jr., William and E.B. White, The Elements of Style, 3rd ed., Allyn Bacon, 1995.) Uses of One-Sentence Paragraphs Three situations in essay writing can occasion a one-sentence paragraph: (a) when you want to emphasize a crucial point that might otherwise be buried; (b) when you want to dramatize a transition from one stage in your argument to the next; and (c) when instinct tells you that your reader is tiring and would appreciate a mental rest. The one-sentence paragraph is a great device. You can italicize with it, vary your pace with it, lighten your voice with it, signpost your argument with it. But it’s potentially dangerous. Don’t overdo your dramatics. And be sure your sentence is strong enough to withstand the extra attention it’s bound to receive when set off by itself. Houseplants wilt in direct sun. Many sentences do as well. (Trimble, John R. Writing with Style: Conversations on the Art of Writing. Prentice Hall, 2000.) Paragraph Length in Business and Technical Writing A paragraph should be just long enough to deal adequately with the subject of its topic sentence. A new paragraph should begin whenever the subject changes significantly. A series of short, undeveloped paragraphs can indicate poor organization and sacrifice unity by breaking an idea into several pieces. A series of long paragraphs, however, can fail to provide the reader with manageable subdivisions of thought. Paragraph length should aid the readers understanding of idea. (Alred, Gerald J., Charles T. Brusaw, and Walter E. Oliu, The Business Writers Handbook, 10th ed., Bedford/St. Martins, 2012.) The Paragraph as a Device of Punctuation The paragraph is a device of punctuation. The indentation by which it is marked implies no more than an additional breathing space. Like the other marks of punctuation...it may be determined by logical, physical, or rhythmical needs. Logically it may be said to denote the full development of a single idea, and this indeed is the common definition of the paragraph. It is, however, in no way an adequate or helpful definition. (Read, Herbert. English Prose Style, Beacon, 1955.) Scott and Dennys Definition of a Paragraph A paragraph is a unit of discourse developing a single idea. It consists of a group or series of sentences closely related to one another and to the thought expressed by the whole group or series. Devoted, like the sentence, to the development of one topic, a good paragraph is also, like a good essay, a complete treatment in itself. (Scott, Fred Newton, and Joseph Villiers Denny, Paragraph-Writing: A Rhetoric for Colleges, rev. ed., Allyn and Bacon, 1909.) Development of the Paragraph in English The paragraph as we know it comes into something like settled shape in Sir William Temple (1628-1699). It was the product of perhaps five chief influences. First, the tradition, derived from the authors and scribes of the Middle Ages, that the paragraph-mark distinguishes a stadium of thought. Second, the Latin influence, which was rather towards disregarding the paragraph as the sign of anything but emphasis - the emphasis-tradition being also of medieval origin; the typical writers of the Latin influence are Hooker and Milton. Third, the natural genius of the Anglo-Saxon structure, favorable to the paragraph. Fourth, the beginnings of popular writing - of what may be called the oral style, or consideration for a relatively uncultivated audience. Fifth, the study of French prose, in this respect a late influence, allied in its results with the third and fourth influences. (Lewis, Herbert Edwin. The History of the English Paragraph, 1894.) 19c writers reduced the lengths of their paragraphs, a process that has continued in the 20c, particularly in journalism, advertisements, and publicity materials. (McArthur, Tom. Paragraph. The Oxford Companion to the English Language, Oxford University Press,  1992.)

Japanese Art of the Kamakura Period Research Paper

Japanese Art of the Kamakura Period - Research Paper Example Even with constant wars, the Buddhist religion got support from the samurais and other people. Other cultures and traditions were practiced, as they become a popular commodity. The arrival of the Europeans changed the Japanese ways of thinking as the constant wars were reduced. The word medieval may seem to be inquisitive, because it was first applied to European history. It elaborates a middle phase connecting the go down of the Roman kingdom and the beginning of the renaissance. Throughout this era, middle government was unstable and people were divided among feudal leaders. 16th century Japan was separated in the midst of warlords recognized as Daimy, and Europeans who came to Japan at that moment felt it look like medieval Europe. In the 1900s, Japanese educationist also saw this resemblance (Lang & Jujutsu). They took the term medieval to illustrate the era when Japanese imperial authority was unstable and warriors took a significant part in leading the society. These were the t imes of Japan’s first two warrior authorities: the Kamakura and the Muromachi. There are many questions asked about the Japanese’s warriors and their operations. People have come up with different answers and assumptions to these questions. During the late year 1170s, nobody might have imagined that soldiers led by the Minamoto tribe were about to create an autonomous government. The majority of warriors worked as middle-level officers in the district, operating as supervisors on government personal public lands or on confidential estates (Lang & Jujutsu). They took their place to central government upper class and strong temples. If a soldier breaks the rules of his superiors, he would be taken to be a rebel and his properties given to opponents. Consequently, for most of the 12th century, regal officials controlled the soldiers. The two supreme soldiers clans of the moment were the Taira (also recognized as the Heike) and the Minamoto (recognized as the Genji). Both worked for associates of the regal relatives and the Fujiwara relatives of regents. In the years 1150s, the Taira were on the victory side in a pair of disagreements that assisted them go up to places of power. The Taira head, Kiyomori, became prime Minister and wedded his daughter to a potential emperor (Lang &Jujutsu). In difference, the Minamoto were on the losing side in the two disagreements. Consequently, the tribe’s adult male leaders were executed and the boys sent into hideouts. During the year 1179, Kiyomori took the role of a practical dictator. In the year 1180, he forced the regal court to crown his grandson (the kid of his daughter who had wedded a royal leader) the next ruler. That same year, a displeased royal prince, angry that he was passed over for the throne, gave a call-to-arms. Yoritomo sent away leader of the Minamoto tribe and now a grown-up, activated soldiers to join him in ambushing the Taira. The Minamoto and Taira battled the span of the state for five years in a disagreement known as the Genpei fight (Sato 12). When the Taira were at the end defeated, Yoritomo continued with the building of Japan’s initial warrior government. The actual importance of the war was the soldier’s first move towards autonomy from the regal government. Yoritomo won over majority of eastern soldiers over by securing their lands and employment. Consequently, soldiers who were unconfident with the previous system chose to unite with the Minamoto, although they were not really part of the Minamoto

A Question of Ethics - Essay Example On the other hand, Danny’s mother violated the principle of space and privacy which is important in interpersonal communication and relationships. Danny needed some space, he went out with friends after a very long time and if his mother was getting so anxious then she could have called to check. Also, Danny’s mother had not slept the entire night, so she should not have initiated the conversation and should have waited till a more appropriate time to start the discussion. Both Danny and his mother also commit a face-threatening act which made their arguments more intense. Danny’s mother had no need to taunt Danny about the fact that his parents do not seek rent, feed him for free and so forth because such statements can hurt a person’s emotions, even if they are unintentional. Conversely, Danny should have just tried to understand and appreciate his mother's concern instead of retaliating because it was his negligence in the first place that became the ca use of his mother’s anxiety.
